Choosing a Rifle Scope: The Qualities That Mean The Most

June 12th, 2010

There are many factors that you must consider when buying a rifle scope. Start by finding a scope with the field of view that fits your hunting method — narrower for slow targets — wider for fast prey.

Next, you need to consider the magnification of the scope. Generally, a wide range from low to high is best, such as a 3x/15x, rather than a narrow range, such as a 3x/5x. Likewise, it is important to consider how far from the target you’ll be when firing, as well as the size of the prey you are hunting.

Other considerations include the type of reticle (or crosshairs) that you are buying, as well as the parallax (or range of focus) for the scope.

Finally, there is price. A $5,000 scope won’t make a $200 gun perform much better than a $200 scope will. But if you are paying a good price for a quality gun, then you should at least consider a mid-level scope, such as a Leupold® VXII Scope, Bushnell Tactical Elite 3200 Riflescope, or a Nikon Buckmaster Rifle Scope
to start with. These scopes will serve most hunters quite well.

New Night Vision Technology From The Army

June 13th, 2010

We’ve all been in this situation.  Driving at night, struggling to see the road through the glare of oncoming cars.

Now imagine this.  A war zone.  You have on night vision goggles, and are peering into the night.

You see something.  Is it an enemy vehicle coming your way, or is it part of your team, returning from patrol?  You need to seen clearly, and a team from JFIIT has found a way to make that happen.

JFIIT calls this system “White Light”, and it takes away the halo effect when light hits your night vision.

The Joint Fires Integration and Interoperability Team (JFIIT)is testing new night time identification system at the Army’s National Training Center (NTC). At night in Iraq, there are combat identification issues when a friendly convoy from one unit meets a friendly convoy from another unit on a road.

A light filtering scheme that enables the drivers of these convoys wearing night vision goggles can help identify a friendly convoy so they don’t inadvertently fire on them.

Tristar Shot Gun and ATN 410 Spartan Fail

September 2nd, 2010

I was weary about mounting a heavy night vision scope on a shotgun. I should have trusted my gut instincts. The ATN guide states you can mount this thing onto a .308 caliber rifle, I believe their Ad. I think shotguns just have a completely different type of recoil? But I am no rifle expert by any means. I now have the ATN mounted on an SKS with considerably much lower recoil. I also mounted a standard rifle scope on my slug gun. Why a rifle scope? Because these slugs can def. reach out and touch someone as you will see in my next video.

Night vision rifle scope question (Beretta CX4 Storm)?

August 22nd, 2010

I’m looking for a gun scope that totally utilizes night vision. Most of the scopes say "night vision compatible" on them. I’m not interested in "compatible" It is for a Beretta CX4 Storm so it’s not for long range. Any specific suggestions?
